Many churches today will attempt to teach you that when Jesus died on the cross he only did a part of the job of cleansing us from all of our sins. They may tell you you need to do more than just believe in Jesus Christ, you must do good works. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ stands at the center of the Christian faith. It is the ultimate act of God’s love, providing full atonement for sin and reconciliation with the Father. The teaching of purgatory, which claims that believers must undergo additional purification after death before entering heaven, undermines this fundamental truth. Scripture affirms that Christ’s sacrifice is entirely sufficient, leaving no need for further cleansing.
The Bible unequivocally teaches that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is sufficient to atone for all sins. The author of Hebrews declares, “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). Through His single act of sacrifice, Christ achieved the complete cleansing and perfection of those who trust in Him.
Jesus Himself proclaimed the completion of His redemptive work with His final words on the cross: “It is finished” (John 19:30). Christ’s death fulfilled the demands of God’s justice and secured forgiveness for all who believe in Him. No further sacrifice or purification is necessary because His atonement is perfect and complete.
Paul reinforces this truth in Colossians 2:13–14: “And you, being dead in your trespasses… He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us… He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” Christ’s work has removed every trace of sin’s guilt and penalty.
The doctrine of purgatory claims that while Christ’s sacrifice saves believers from hell, they must undergo additional purification after death to be fully sanctified. This teaching directly contradicts Scripture, which affirms that believers are already fully cleansed and justified through faith in Christ.
Moreover, Hebrews 9:27–28 states, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many.” This passage emphasizes that Christ’s sacrifice was singular and sufficient, and that judgment—not purification—follows death.
The concept of purgatory is absent from the Bible and arises from extra-biblical traditions. It undermines the gospel by implying that Christ’s sacrifice was incomplete or insufficient to secure the believer’s full redemption. Paul warns against adding to the gospel in Galatians 2:21: “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” Similarly, any teaching that suggests believers must contribute to their own purification denies the sufficiency of Christ’s grace.
Christ’s death and resurrection decisively conquered sin, death, and the grave. Paul proclaims in 1 Corinthians 15:55–57, “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? … But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” This victory ensures that sin no longer holds power over believers, and its penalty has been fully paid.
Through His sacrifice, Christ disarmed the forces of evil and triumphed over them (Colossians 2:15). Believers are united with Him in His death and resurrection, sharing in His victory and freedom from sin’s penalty (Romans 6:5–7). This union guarantees that no further cleansing or suffering is necessary.
The sacrifice of Jesus Christ is entirely sufficient to redeem, justify, and sanctify all who believe in Him. His atonement fully pays the penalty for sin and leaves no need for further purification. The teaching of purgatory, which suggests that believers require additional cleansing after death, contradicts the clear testimony of Scripture and diminishes the sufficiency of Christ’s work. Believers can rest in the assurance that their salvation is secure, their sins are forgiven, and they are fully reconciled to God through the finished work of Christ on the cross. It is finished—and nothing more is needed.
