After his ship, HMS Investigator, sought refuge here during a summer storm, Matthew Flinders gave the bay the name Lucky Bay. A botanist named Robert Brown went ashore and looked into a wide range of plants that were mostly unknown to him. He found and named many new species. A plaque on the rocks at the bay’s eastern end honors this important historical event.
