The sacrifice that Christ made is completely sufficient, and it occupies the central place within the Christian faith. This stands as the greatest and most complete expression of God’s love, since it offers full atonement for sin as well as reconciliation with the Father. The doctrine of purgatory, which asserts that believers have to endure a further process of purification after they die before they can enter heaven, weakens and undermines this essential truth. Scripture confirms that the sacrifice of Christ is wholly sufficient, so that no additional cleansing is ever required.
The Bible states in no uncertain terms that the sacrifice Christ made upon the cross is fully sufficient to atone for every sin. The writer of the book of Hebrews proclaims, “For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified” (Hebrews 10:14). By means of that one sacrificial act, Christ brought about the full cleansing and the complete perfection of everyone who places their trust in Him.
Jesus Himself proclaimed the completion of His redemptive work with His final words on the cross: “It is finished” (John 19:30). Christ’s death fulfilled the demands of God’s justice and secured forgiveness for all who believe in Him. No further sacrifice or purification is necessary because His atonement is perfect and complete.
