Mockers are a sign that the return of Jesus Christ could be very close.
Mockers have been around since the time Jesus Christ was here on this earth. People have been waiting for his return, as He promised to do. It has now been the best part of two thousand years since they crucified Jesus, resurrected from the dead and promised to return. Many Christians are asking the question. “When will He return?”. While many other non-believers are saying “He will never return”.
Well, there are many signs in the world today that show Jesus’ return is close. Closer than most people believe. One sure sign is mockers will become more prevalent. They will mock sin and make light of it, they will openly commit it and glory in it. And mostly they will scoff at religion. These are the people the Apostle Peter wrote about in his letter to the Church and recorded for us in.
2Pe 3:3 knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts.
2Pe 3:4 and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”
Mockers in the World
These mockers are becoming more clear today as we see a world changing quickly. And most times it is not for the better. Read the following passages from the second book of Timothy to see some ways our world is changing. And see also God predicted this to happen in the “last days”. We are very close to this time in man’s history. Therefore, we must be ready for what our futures hold.
2Ti 3:1 But know this, that in the last days, grievous times will come.
(2) For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.
(3) without natural affection, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control,
fierce, not lovers of good.
(4) traitors, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.
(5) holding a form of godliness, but having denied its power. Turn away from these, also.
Over the past few decades we have seen these characteristics becoming more prevalent and no doubt we will see more of this type of behaviour in the coming years. This world will go from bad to worse. These people will be the mockers who do not believe in Christ’s return. Social media has a much to answer for regarding this type of conduct among in our society. And we do not reserve it only for the young. Many older people also enjoy the sleazy side of social media.
Mockers, or scoffers, are a sure sign as we see in.
2Pe 3:3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.
(4) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
(5) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
(6) By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
(7) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
(8) But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
(9) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
As we saw in verse eight, time is no barrier for God. He is outside of time because He created all things, including time. God is working to His own timetable and not ours. Then in verse nine we see exactly why God is not rushing into His return. He is waiting for as many people as possible to turn to Him and be saved.
Just Show Us Jesus
Many people will say, “just show us Jesus, and we will believe”. Well, I am afraid that will definitely not work. Remember what happened to Jesus when He was here the first time. Most people did not believe. And even though they saw many of His miracles, it made little difference. They finally had Jesus put to death on the cross. So I doubt it would make any difference to most people today if they saw Jesus or not. They will still want to pursue their own interests and will reject Jesus and His teachings again.
They are more interested in doing their own thing. Jesus gave only one sign that he was who He claimed to be. Mockers do not see this sign and will therefore be unprepared for His return.
Free Will
There is one thing you can rely upon, and that is God will force no one to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. He gave us all free will and even though this causes our troubles, He will never take it away from us. We were created in His image to have a relationship with Him. He does not need another flock of sheep. He wants us to turn to Him of our own free will.
Jude 1:18 also warns us of these mockers in the last times.
Jud_1:18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts.”
When you see and hear of people mocking the return of Jesus Christ, you can be sure it is a sign of the times. A sure sign of the return of our Lord. So do not worry when you see these mockers in the world. Just keep your eyes and mind on the return of Jesus and the promises He has made to you.
